Pile dwellings and lighthouses
The seven-metre-high wooden houses floating on stilts above the beach are the landmark of St. Peter-Ording: the so-called pile dwellings are spectacular and always worth a visit. Here you can enjoy delicious snacks and refreshing drinks in one of the trendy cafés or restaurants with a spectacular view of the North Sea and beach. But there is more to discover than just culinary delights in the stilt houses: some of the pile dwellings house lifeguards, beach chair rental, changing rooms and toilets. The youngest pile dwelling is exceptionally located behind the dyke: children, young people, adults and families can spend time together in the adventure house.
Lighthouses are also popular excursion destinations as symbols of the North Sea coast. While the Westerhever lighthouse has the typical red and white striped look, the Böhl lighthouse impresses with its view over the landscape and breathtaking sunsets.
Eidersperrwerk and Katinger Watt
The Eidersperrwerk is the perfect place to arrive on vacation and get in the mood for the far north: Watch ships and eat fish sandwiches. The gigantic structure was built in response to a devastating storm surge in 1962 and is intended to protect the hinterland from flooding. At the same time, this construction also created the Katinger Watt: vast green and wooded areas with birdwatching huts and observation towers. Here, nature can be consciously perceived and discovered.
Maleens Knoll
A legendary excursion destination can be found at Maleens Knoll. The dune is the highest natural elevation in the region and offers a fantastic panoramic view of the dune landscape from its viewing platform.
Seal banks
Boat trips to the seal banks are not only popular with families and children. With a bit of luck, the seals can be observed swimming in the North Sea or sunbathing on the sandbank: a unique and unforgettable experience for the whole family.
Multimar Wattforum
The Multimar Wattforum is also a wonderful excursion destination for families with children. The National Park Center offers an interactive exhibition that invites you to explore, try out and touch. The aquariums with seahorses, cat sharks, crabs, rays and many other sea creatures offer unique insights into the fascinating world of the national park region.
Port town of Tönning
If you're looking for a little urban flair in between all the nature experiences, you'll find it in Tönning. The small, picturesque town invites you to stroll and linger. Bathing fun is also guaranteed on the typical North German green and dyke beach and in the heated outdoor pool. A balanced mix of culture and fun for the whole family awaits you here.
